About PICC Lines

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) are used to provide central venous access to all patient populations, from neonates to geriatrics. PICC lines are used to deliver medications and fluids that are generally contraindicated for peripheral intravenous infusion. Indications for the use of PICC lines include long-term antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy, total-parenteral nutrition (TPN), difficult venous access, and frequent blood-draws.

PICC Solutions: Single-lumen PICC line. PICCs provide a safer alternative to traditional central venous access devices, such as subclavian, femoral and internal jugular lines. Typical complications associated with these traditional access methods, including pneumothorax and blood-stream infection (BSI), are significantly reduced.

In the adult population, PICC lines are typically inserted in the upper arm, utilizing ultrasound technology. The catheter is typically 40-50cm in length, with the tip of the catheter terminating in the Superior Vena Cava (SVC). The catheter can be single, double, or triple lumen, ranging from 1.9fr to 6fr in diameter. CT power-injectable PICC lines are available for high-pressure contrast delivery during imaging studies. PICC lines can also be placed in the neonate and pediatric populations, with placement in the saphenous vein, posterior auricular vein, or either arm.
